About

Critical Proximity is a small, informal conference organised in collaboration with game criticism curators Critical Distance. By bringing people to a shared space, we aim to move forward together; to locate common ground, build bridges, and get directions. We’ll discuss games and criticism through four main themes:

Inward

Attendees are encouraged to talk about past conversations and collaborations, which may include stories of fruitful teamwork to lessons learned about staying safe in online social spaces.

Microtalks: 10:00-11:15

Roundtable: 11:45-12:15

Outward

How does criticism interact with the broader field of games? We want to hear from developers, players, educators, and anyone else. Your voice is key in discussing how we can help each other in the future.

Microtalks: 11:45-1:00

Roundtable: 2:30-3:00

Upward

Games criticism is often unsupported by traditional publishing structures. On top of that, great work done outside of mainstream outlets goes largely unrecognized. Learn from other critics about new alternatives for financial support and creative recognition.

Microtalks: 2:30-3:45

Roundtable: 4:15-4:45

Forward

We will of course also discuss the craft of writing itself. Come and hear about many different analytical frameworks, creative practices and diverse styles of critical writing in games.

Microtalks: 4:15-5:30

Roundtable: 10:45-11:15
